The environmental framework of Beturia is, without a doubt, one of its biggest attractions, because it combines, in such a quite small land, very diverse ecosystems which follow in perfect harmony for the astonishment and rejoicing of visitors.
To walk through these regions also means to enjoy its numerous medieval bridges, waterwheels, mills, fulling machines and other samples of architecture and industrial archeology of ancient times, to which plastic interest converges an outstanding ethnographic value. Start our route through the ZEPA (Zone of Special Protection to Birds) Sierra de Hornachos (1) in Tierra de Barros, where as in many other parts of Badajoz it is possible to observe many bird species of great ornithological interest. Another very important ZEPA is the one in the region named Campiña Sur-Arroyo Conejos (2). In Campiña Sur we cal also find the Mine of La Jayona (3). In the zone of the southern part of the region, the region of Tentudía invites to stop the passing of time and to enjoy a privileged natural environment. Without a doubt, the meadow represents its predominant landscape unity, being considered an example of sustainable development, making tremendously compatible ranching exploitation, which maximal exponent is the Iberian pig, with the wild fauna richness. One of the most spectacular corners of the region is the geological complex of Fuentes de León (4), composed by a series of caves and sinks declared Natural Monument. In them, we must highlight the presence of big bat colonies, which are the natural controllers of agricultural and forest plagues, as well as the existence in some of the caves of considerably large lakes. In the Region of Zafra-Río Bodión the land is defined by the alternation of rugged areas with others of low sharp hills, forming a specially attractive contrast’s landscape, completed with the proliferation of artificial lakes. The characteristic that best defines the land of the region Sierra Suroeste is the geographic heterogeneity, under the sign of a well preserved natural mean and a fascinating landscape’s grandeur. Occupying corners of singular beauty, they appear reservoirs which put a pleasant emphasis of freshness in places traditionally dry, together with true paradises, in addition to hunting and fishing. A great part of the land is covered by amazing meadows (5), considered as the best of the World, rock roses, crubland and other species characteristic of the Mediterranean forest, sparking off a sturdy and wild landscape, highly expressive of the secular physiognomy of Extremadura, in which realms some of the best herd of Iberian pig are developed. The Sierras of Jerez and Dehesas form a complex declared ZEPA (6).
