Sun and Avocados Route

Coastal flavour and rural peace

With the Mediterranean sea as the starting point, along the course of this route the atmosphere and gaiety of the tourist centres of the coast are mixed with the peace and calm proportioned by the isolation of the beautiful rural of the interior.

The starting point of this route begins from the Mediterranean sea very near to Malaga's capital city. It runs along the greater part of the coast of the eastern Costa del Sol, from Rincon de la Victoria up to Torre del Mar, where it turns in by a fertile valley of olives, vines and plantations of subtropical fruits.

Without going far from the coast, the road turns in towards villages with great rural enchantment such as Benamargosa, Benamacorra, Iznate or Cajiz, a little village in which every Easter Week there is a realistic enactment of the life death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Also Rincon de la Victoria has some great hidden surprises such as La Cueva del Tesoro. But without doubt where where there is the greatest concentration of monumental heritage is in the capital of Axarquia, Velez Malaga. The present site of the locality has a deeply Muslim past; Alcazaba, recently restored, reminds one of this. One of the most enchanting places in the locality is El Cerro, where one finds the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, an austere place of worship where the mural paintings of Evaristo Guerra are outstanding. Numerous convents and civil buildings complete the richness of its heritage in the old centre which has been declared a Place of Historic and Artistic Interest.

A last attraction of this route is the seafaring tradition of the people of Axarquia which manifests itself in the seaman's procession of the Virgen del Carmen.Colourful floats, touched by the pale light of the dawn accompany the mariners virgin in a very evocative spectacle.
