Monumental route through Martos
|
Castles and Battles
Martos is a defensive enclave, witness of the history and its battles, which keeps all the local style and architecture of the Andalusian villages.
This route shows us complexes as the walls and towers of the Fortaleza Baja or of the Villa (S XIV) and the Fortaleza Alta or Castle of the Peña of the XIII-XIV centuries. We must highlight the Real Iglesia Parroquia of Santa Marta (XV-XVII centuries) where we find the chapel of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (XVII century). It’s also worth the visit of the Convent of the Trinitarian, the old Hospital and Church of San Juan de Dios (XVII century); the chapels of San Sebastián and San Miguel; and finally, the complex of Historicist Architecture of the end of the XIX century and beginnings of the XX century, passing around the streets Real and Albollón. For the lovers of Nature, in Martos it has been developed the Route through the Centenarian Olive Trees and the Green way of Oil. The old Prison and City Hall, seat of the local Town hall, and the monumental Fuente Nueva (New Fountain) are the most significant monuments of the Renaissance spirit that covered the entire province and that did not forget this southwestern corner, already close to the provinces of Granada and Cordoba. The old prison shows the splendor of the civil architecture of Martos of the XVI century, work of Francisco del Castillo.
