Martos. Olive Grove’ Cradle

Martos, in the Jaen countryside, rises up and is structured around its Crag, symbol of the town. It is an individual tectonic element that since antiquity has favored the human settlement.

It was the Iberian city of Tucci, becoming in the Roman period the Colony Augusta Gemella. After the Visigoth period, the Muslims gave it its actual name of Martos and once reconquested became the capital of the Calatrava Order in Alto Guadalquivir. The mark of these civilizations is evident in a rich artistic=architectonic historic patrimony in this Olive Groove’s cradle. This farming is not only the economic motor but also part of its cultural identity. Crowned by the legendary crag, Martos stretches out through its sides, forming a beautiful complex of scattered white houses, looking for the countryside, the olive groove.
The richness of the Historic complex has been worth the declaration of Cultural interest’s site in 2003. Martos shares in different monumental routes of Jaen, as the route of the Renaissance.
