The richness of Granada's heritage is immense and goes beyond the marvellous Andalucian legacy which the Muslims left behind in her, with jewels like the Nazarene complex of the Alhambra and the Generalife.
The Gothic, the Renaissance and the Baroque were also implanted in a city which unites in itself the best of each people, each artistic style and each historical circumstance. The six heritage itineraries which the traveller may now enjoy are a demonstration of this. The meeting place and point of coexistence of diverse peoples who encountered their paradise here, the city of Granada is a coherent and heterogeneous magma of ancient stones and wisdoms. Although the jewel in the crown is the Alhambra and the Generalife, the city jealously guards a splendid collection of heritage sites, in which are included imposing religious monuments, stately civil buildings, magic and hidden little squares or evocative Muslim water cisterns known as aljibes. Conscious of the importance of distributing these riches amongst its visitors, the Ayuntamiento, or Town Hall, of the capital city of Granada has created a network of itineraries that share out this historical heritage. One is talking of urban pathways, unforgettable walks through a city which is a real open air museum. Six structural itineraries have been established which correspond to the principal historical periods of urban Granada. These heritage routes are nothing but the evidence that Granada is pure art. The Nazarene palaces of the Alhambra and the Generalife speak clearly of an Andalucian legacy whose art of living had its maximum expression in these filigree walls. But together with the arabic palaces and houses which mark out the city, is intermixed another legacy, perhaps less highly eulogised, but which sows the nooks and crannies of Granada with great achievements of Gothic,Renaissance and Baroque architecture. To sum up, in order to see and feel Granada one must wander through its streets and let oneself be led by the imprints of the civilizations which, down through the centuries, have built this magic city.
