Cáceres is a mosaic of civilizations and races since centuries.
The first samples of the human being in this land date from the prehistoric age and, as an example, it’s worth to highlight the cave of “Maltravieso”. This settlement has in it the oldest pictorial samples of the province, with an age of around 30.000 years.
From the Tartessus and Celts still remain some forts and other incipient constructions. But the Romans were the first civilization who leaves a deep mark in the province, founding strategic cities like Cáparra (of which we still preserve its famous Arc); erecting bridges like the one of Alcántara or roads like the “Vía de la Plata”, which crosses the province from North to South.
The Arabic presence become obvious either in the different constructions visitors can admire in villages and cities (castles, citadels and walls) or in the old handcrafted traditions that survive in many of the villages of Cáceres.
The capital, Cáceres, and the town of Hervás have two of the most important Jewish quarters of our country, both of them are included in the Spanish Net of Jewish quarters.
With the Modern Age, the great discoveries arrive and Trujillo becomes the mother of the conquerors: Pizarro, Orellana, Nuflo de Chaves, all of them contributed to the knowledge and expansion of the Extremaduran values in the World.
