The Cristo Amarrado de la Columna is 250 years old
The city celebrates in 2006 “a year of grace” (Lucas 4). Jumilla commemorates the 250 years from the arrival and stay of the image of the Santísimo Cristo Amarrado de la Columna. An image in which the village sees the reflection of the icon of love and approach of Christian God, and so was it recognized by the Vatican, in charge of awarding this reconnaissance, an anniversary that claims one of the biggest celebrations of the region, the Holy Week of Jumilla. It is the main popular celebration and it has been declared of National Tourist Interest in 2003, because of its tradition, devotion and enthusiasm, even if at the beginning it was humbly, visited by a few neighbors and authorities. From the second half of the XIX Century the first fraternities were created, between them the one from the Cristo de la Columna. The weeks of festivals start the Good Friday with the Via Crucis, day in which the streets become great exhibitors of the images. The processions start on Palm Sunday with the Procession of the Palms. The holly Tuesday takes place the penitential procession of Cristo de la Vida. Wednesday and Thursday is the turn of the Prendimiento and Las Manolas, respectively. On Holly Friday two processions take place: El Calvario and Santo Entierro. To know more about this celebration of Jumilla, the best is to visit the Holly Week Museum. It has a small sample of the making of religious images, as well as standards and tunics that parade during these days.
