Three towns already existed in the zone in the first century a.C.: TINGENTERA, built on the grounds now occupied by modern Tarifa; MELARIA, next to the beach of “Valdevaqueros”. Finally Bolonia, It was a densely populated town judging by the proportions of its theatre and forum. The name of “Tarifa” was obtained after the arab invasion whose control of it lasted almost six centuries. In September 1292, the troops of Castille conquered the city and annexed it permanently the main kingdom in the peninsula. After the british occupation of the city and harbour of Gibraltar at the beginning of 1600, Tarifa was fortified to the category of strong place, a century later the Napoleonic troops failed at their intent of conquest it.
